Tilda Swinton in Madame Gres for “The Impossible Wardrobe”

In October of 2012, Tilda Swinton took part in an offbeat performance in which she breathed life into rare treasures from the archive of Paris’ Galliera Museum of Fashion.

Entitled the “The Impossible Wardrobe,” the performance piece, curated by Olivier Saillard, saw Tilda Swinton wearing a white robe, the kind once worn by the models in the couture salon of Yves Saint Laurent, walking on the runway, holding - but never actually wearing - articles of clothing from the historic archives of the Galliera.

Back and forth 56 times in heels the color of sandpaper, Ms. Swinton walked down the runway as she created a sort of dialogue with the former owner of each garment, using specific gestures that Ms. Swinton and Mr. Saillard created with the assistance of Axelle Doué, a model who was once the muse to designers like Thierry Mugler and Claude Montana.

For the show, staged over three days at the Palais de Tokyo modern art museum, Olivier Saillard chose 56 dresses, coats, and accessories, many by the greatest names in fashion history like Elsa Schiaparelli, Cristobal Balenciaga, Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Pierre Balmain, and Madame Gres.

Separately, a film created by the artist Katerina Jebb, showing Ms. Swinton interacting with the clothing, was playing in a neighboring gallery during performances throughout the weekend as part of the Autumn Festival in Paris.
